Ohio River Way ‘Paddlefest’ to Feature Redesigned Pink Canoe to Promote Paddling for Cancer Awareness

     The Ohio River Way will host its seventth annual “Paddlefest” on the Ohio River June 27 and 28, 2008. Thaxton’s South Fork Canoe Trails, in cooperation with Paddling for Cancer Awareness, will donate their 28 foot Voyager Canoe which they painted all the colors of cancer. It can hold up to 16  cancer survivors and patients who will journey 8 miles down the Ohio River on June 28, 2008.  With the addition of two more voyaguer canoes donated by Ed Council of Canoe Kentucky will allow 30 more cancer survivors.                                                                                                    

This is the seventhth consecutive year for this event that draws nearly 2000 paddlers from across the nation for a six mile float down the Ohio River and ends at the Serpentine Wall.              

The mission of the paddlers and sponsors of the Paddling for Cancer Awareness  is to promote cancer awareness to men and  women active in outdoor recreation, to stress the importance of early detection through mammograms and other dianostic tests, to show the value of exercise as an important aspect of healing, and to provide support to all cancer survivors and patients, as well as their families, friends and caregivers, in each patient’s journey with cancer.

Since last year’s Paddlefest the Pink Canoe has traveled to Relay for Life events across the midwest and to other major paddling events including the Quiet Water Syposium in Lansing, Michigan and Canoecopia in Madison, Wisconsin.

You may register online at www.ohioriverway.org Though space in the Voyaguer canooes is limited and will be made available on a first come first served basis, you may also rent canoes and kayaks or bring your own. Plan on camping with us at Coney Island on Friday night, too.
